PROGRAMBased in the Flemish city of Antwerp and conducted by its founder, Björn Schmelzer, Graindelavoix is, unarguably, one of the finest and most interesting vocal ensembles dedicated to polyphony. Its programme for the concert includes the eloquent testament Tenebrae Responsoria by Carlo Gesualdo, a genius in musical chiaroscuro and shade, melancholic sentiments, extreme chromatic effects, and striking dissonance. The enigmatic, sanguinary Prince of Venosa wrote the motets also known as Lliçons de tenebres (published in 1611) for the church services of the Holy Week’s last three days (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday). The audience will also be able to enjoy the premier of Miserere mei Deus by Joan Magrané, a composer who has made polyphony one of the cornerstones and main hallmarks of his music.
