L’Auditori de Barcelona will host a Concert for Peace, organised by the Fundació Victoria de los Ángeles, Barcelona City Council and the Regional Government of Catalonia at 8 pm on 30 March to raise money for the ‘Ukraine needs you’ project from the Red Cross. The musicians and singers taking part in the event will perform free of charge and all the proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross to help fund the project.

The Concert for Peace is an initiative by the Fundació Victoria de los Ángeles, with the collaboration of the following institutions, which have offered the use of their facilities and their technical teams and other staff, in addition to meeting the costs of the event: Fundació Victoria de los Ángeles, Barcelona City Council, Regional Government of Catalonia’s Department for Culture, L’Auditori de Barcelona, Sant Cugat Town Council, Franz Schubert Association, Conservatori del Liceu, State Government Delegation in Catalonia, Escolania de Montserrat, Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), Franz Schubert Filharmonia, Fundació Pau Casals, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Palau de la Música Catalana – Orfeó Català and Barcelona University.

Conductors Mireia Barrera, Salvador Brotons, Tomàs Grau, Ernest Martínez Izquierdo, Jordi Mora, Pedro Pardo, Xavier Puig, Antoni Ros Marbà and Jordi Savall will take part in the concert at the head of the Peace Orchestra and Choir, made up of volunteer musicians and singers from orchestras attached to different institutions in Barcelona, such as the Gran Teatre del Liceu Symphony Orchestra and Choir, Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC), Franz Schubert Filharmonia, Vallès Symphony Orchestra, Fundació Victoria de los Ángeles, Escolania de Montserrat, Fundació Pau Casals, Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), Conservatori del Liceu, Coral Càrmina and Cuarteto Casals. The concert will also feature singers Joyce DiDonato (mezzo-soprano), Airam Hernández (tenor), Mattia Olivieri (baritone), Marina Pinchuk (mezzo-soprano), and Katerina Tretyakova (soprano), together with cellist Miquel Keenan Fuentes (who trained at the Conservatori del Liceu and was awarded an Honorary Mention at the 2020 Pau Casals International Award) and violinist Vera Martínez Mehner (the first violin with Cuarteto Casals).

The programme includes Prayer for Ukraine by Valentin Silvestrov, conducted by Ernest Martínez Izquierdo; The Great Gate at Kiev from ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ by Modest Mussorgsky, conducted by Xavier Puig; Adagio by Samuel Barber, conducted by Jordi Mora; the traditional Catalan song El rossinyol (The Nightingale), conducted by Mireia Barrera; Da pacem domine by Arvo Pärt, under the baton of Jordi Savall; Morgen! Op. 27/4 (Tomorrow!) by Richard Strauss with Joyce DiDonato (mezzo-soprano), conducted by Pedro Pardo; Nimrod (Adagio) from Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar, conducted by Tomàs Grau; Symphony No. 9 (4th movement) by Ludwig van Beethoven, conducted by Salvador Brotons with soloists Katerina Tretyakova (soprano), Marina Pinchuk (mezzo-soprano), Airam Hernández, (tenor) and Mattia Olivieri (baritone); and, to round off the programme, Madrigal sobre un tema popular ‘El cant dels ocells’ (Madrigal on a popular theme ‘Birdsong’) by Xavier Montsalvatge, with the Escolania de Montserrat and Miquel Keenan Fuentes, under the baton of Antoni Ros Marbà.
