Saxophonist and clarinettist Lluc Casares will be appearing with his septet tomorrow at 8 pm in Hall 3, Tete Montoliu at L’Auditori de Barcelona. Casares is one of today’s most nomadic Catalan jazz musicians. After studying at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya and the Conservatorium Van Amsterdam, he joined the Artist Diploma Ensemble at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, directed by Wynton Marsalis.
Casares’ music is characterised by a combination of two elements that might, a priori, seem incompatible: composition and improvisation. This can be seen in his latest recording Sketches Overseas (Outside In Music, 2018), in which the careful arrangements always leave room for cutting-edge improvisation. With strong bass lines, percussive chords and carefully crafted melodies, Casares’ music has much in common with Straight Ahead Jazz.
The concert will be live streamed tomorrow, 20 February, via L’Auditori Digital.
