PHILIP JECK (1952-2022) – Vinyl Coda I-IV (1999-2003)
A three-hour work in four parts, Vinyl Coda is a slow, circular presentation of the sound universe underlying Philip Jeck’s musical discourse. He constructs it by superimposing layers of sound created from decontextualised fragments of other pieces of music, manipulating the movement of the record player pick-up arm, sticking physical elements onto vinyl records and amplifying the noise caused by the deterioration of the surface. Repetitive, staggered music that expands into a vacillating asynchrony as the turntable goes round.

WILLIAM BASINSKI (1958) – The Disintegration Loops (2002-3)
The Disintegration Loops is a work in six parts, lasting nearly five hours, that was constructed using tape loops of radio recordings made in the 1980s. When these loops were digitalised so that they could be preserved, the composer noticed that the recordings deteriorated as they were repeatedly played. The fine magnetic coating was breaking up and the sound quality worsened slightly each time the tape ran past the head. Using this obsolete technology, William Basinski creates a disturbing sound landscape, exploring the mysterious ephemeral nature of life, memory and time.

ALVIN LUCIER (1931-2021) – I Am Sitting in a Room (1969)
Using two tape recorders, a microphone and a loudspeaker, the performer records a text, rewinds the tape and plays it through a loudspeaker to record it on a second tape recorder. The second recording is rewound, played and recorded again using the microphone and the first tape recorder. The process is repeated thirty-two times, over a period of forty minutes. The acoustic properties of the room transform the discourse: the frequencies that resonate are repeatedly reinforced, while the others are attenuated. In the end, only the rhythm of the words is recognisable. The room acts as a filter, transforming speech into pure sound.
