Program
Quartet Diotima is one of the leading string quartets for new-music performance. Magrané’s second string quartet, Alguns cants òrfics, includes verses from Notturni from the book of poetry Canti Orfici by Italian poet Dino Campana, which Magrané uses to create a breathtakingly expressive piece for quartet. Clamour by Gervasoni emphasizes the need for open and deep expression of the important things, affirming an emotional and semantic dimension as opposed to a bombast. Lachenmann bases his music on shaping sound and creating continuity, revealing the unexpected and offering a glimpse of the familiar. In the case of the string quartet, he reminds us that it’s all about a musical conversation. This musical discourse, as with many of his works, questions the act of listening through constant reorientation. In Lachenmann’s Grido, despite reverting at certain moments to his particular use of the instruments’ bodies to create sound, he uses the traditional quartet sound as a sound project with a 16-stringed instrument.
