Program
Since this tragedy by Shakespeare was first written, Romeo and Juliet’s impossible love has continued to be a quintessential artistic theme. Written in 1597, it is never out of date. When Sergei Prokofiev was commissioned with a ballet on the theme, he thought about giving it a happy ending; an idea that he finally rejected so as to remain true to the original. Premiered in Brno in 1938 and Leningrad in 1940, the ballet has become one of the major Soviet works featured in international repertoires. Between 1936 and 1937, the two suites were immediately scheduled to be performed throughout the world, even before the ballet.
PROGRAMTwo very young trombone players, Polina Tarasenko and Iván Plaus, will perform Concert per a dos trombons i banda (Concert for two trombones and band) by Ricardo Mollá, the eminent trombone player and composer from Valencia. Commissioned by the International Trombone Festival, it is dedicated to two great trombone players, Jörgen van Rijen and Michel Becquet.
